Quiet, dog-friendly seaside luxury hotel with warm service.
We rolled off the ferry into Saint-Malo from Portsmouth at breakfast time with the dog in the back. A holiday in Brittany and the Loire Valley lay ahead. We wanted somewhere high-end but low-key: no cavernous lobby, no poolside scene, no queue for a table. The Grand Hotel de Courtoisville St-Malo looked like a good choice, and although not a seafront property, it’s only a block away. It also had the one thing we could not compromise on – a dog-friendly hotel. It turned out to be a very good call. And added bonus, is that the property is a five-minute walk from the seafront and the beaches.

Location
The hotel sits one block back from Plage de la Hoguette and its wide promenade, which is about as good as seaside positioning gets without paying for a direct sea view. Sillon beach is a short stroll further along. The walled old town is roughly 30 minutes on foot, so you can walk in for dinner and taxi back if the weather turns. What makes Courtoisville work is the residential setting. There is no coach traffic and no crowd spilling out of a bar next door, just a quiet street and the sea a minute away. Parking was available on site at €30 for 24 hours, which is worth budgeting for if you arrive by ferry with a car. There’s on-street parking but it requires you to find a spot.

Check-in
We arrived at about 10am, hours before the official 14:00 check-in, and asked if we could leave the bags or pay for early access. We offered to pay extra for an earlier room, and the answer was better than expected. Reception said the room would be ready in 45 minutes, told us to unload the car, and offered to move everything up once housekeeping finished. There was no extra charge. We handed the keys to the concierge and went for a walk along the promenade with the dog and grabbed some breakfast. That’s the kind of unhurried efficiency that separates a good hotel from a merely expensive one. There was no upselling and no hovering, just competence.

Our Room
WWe had suite 122, on the north-western corner of the building, with windows on two sides and views across to the Grand Hôtel des Thermes. The soundproofing was exceptional – the room stayed silent at night even with traffic outside. The king bed was very comfortable, though the pillows were firmer than we prefer. The bathroom offered a tub and a separate rainfall shower with proper pressure, plus a single sink and a large vanity mirror. A separate seating area and spare room made the suite very spacious.

A decent hairdryer with a nozzle and a clothes steamer were provided, but there was no iron and no in-room safe, which is an odd omission at this level. A Nespresso machine and complimentary still water covered the basics. The small balcony overlooked the restaurant terrace, which was pleasant early and quiet late.

Facilities & Services
The hotel has a spa with a hammam and a heated pool, though neither featured in our short stay there, as opted to spend time at the beach instead. Wi-Fi was the weak link. Speeds were fine when it worked, but it dropped out often enough to be irritating. The dog side was handled well, with a bowl and a dog mattress delivered to the room for the extra charge. Staffing was less consistent. We seemed to arrive as the summer team was being trained, and two bar staff were still getting to know the wine list, including whether Saint-Émilion is red or white. Reception and the concierge, by contrast, were excellent throughout.

Bars & Dining
The bar, Le Baccara, is a nice room with comfortable searching and lots of board games.

Dinner at Le 1906 followed a seasonal set menu, and it was properly done. Oysters, razor clams, a lobster bisque with real depth, and cod cooked precisely, finished with a soufflé. These are classic French flavours executed with confidence rather than reinvented for the sake of it. Book dinner early, as the dining room is small and fills quickly.

Breakfast
Breakfast ran from 7am until 10am, even on a Sunday, and combined a buffet with à la carte cooked dishes. The cut-off is enforced, so treat 10am as a hard stop. We rolled up at 10:10 and missed it entirely, which was our own fault but worth flagging if you have had a late crossing. Set an alarm.
Check-out
Standard check-out was midday and reception was flexible about it. The bill was accurate and settled in a couple of minutes, with the parking and the dog charge listed clearly. The concierge carried the bags down and brought the car round without being asked twice. Friendly, quick and entirely painless.
BG1 Verdict
Grand Hotel de Courtoisville St-Malo is a quiet luxury boutique hotel where a great night’s sleep is close to guaranteed, and that alone justifies a lot. It suits couples, particularly those travelling with a dog, and anyone who wants Saint-Malo without the crowds. It does not suit travellers after a buzzy resort with a busy pool deck. The price matches the service, so it is fair rather than cheap. We stayed only 24 hours and left wanting a full weekend. We will be back.
