British Airways Executive Club just announced an extension for members with elite status.
This follows Virgin Atlantic’s announcement that it would be extending the elite status and perks by an additional three months. We were waiting to see if British Airways would follow suit. Surely enough, British Airways announced that it would protect Tier status for its Executive Club Members for another year.
Given that we’ve all been grounded and won’t be able to fly until the restrictions are lifted in the UK. This is great news as we haven’t had the chance to enjoy our status benefits since the pandemic.
Before the coronavirus pandemic that tragically put a hold on all our travel plans, we wrote a blog about whether it’s worth pursuing elite status. We’re glad that our Gold status has been extended for another year, and our membership wouldn’t expire until November 2022.
What does this extension mean for Executive Club members with Elite status?
- Members whose Tier Point collection end date falls between 1 July and 31 December 2021, will have their Tier status protected for an additional 12 months, irrespective of how many Tier Points they earn.
- It means that no British Airways Executive Club member, including Bronze, Silver and Gold card holders will lose their Tier status in 2021.
- This follows members receiving a one-year extension last June
Eligible members will receive an additional 12 months on their expiry date which will be updated in their Executive Club accounts this week. It means that no British Airways Executive Club member will lose their Tier status in 2021.
British Airways also announced a six-month extension to all Executive Club vouchers, due to expire before 31 December 2021. This includes Gold Upgrade Vouchers and American Express Companion Vouchers. British Airways is also adding an additional six-months validity to all new Companion Voucher or Travel Together tickets earned between June 2020 and the end of December 2021.
To make it easier to gain tier status, British Airways continues to reduce the number of Tier Points needed to reach each Tier by 25 per cent for those whose Tier Point collection year ends before July 2022.
What next?
Great to have our status extended, but the fact remain, travel is still pretty risky at the moment. Booking a holiday abroad during a global pandemic is still pretty risky. Even if the situation is improving in certain countries, things can change pretty quickly. So is it worth booking a travel deal at the moment? We always advise to do your research before you travel but also fully expect to spend time in quarantine.
