British Airways Galleries North Lounge Heathrow Review

British Airways’ Galleries lounges at Heathrow have needed a refresh for a while, and Galleries North has finally had its turn. This British Airways Galleries North Lounge Heathrow review comes from a late evening visit, where the lounge was unusually quiet. Whether that’s down to the time of day or fewer people holding status these days is up for debate. Either way, it meant plenty of space and a calm place to spend some time before your flight.

I was travelling in Premium Economy on this trip, booked last minute with the situation around Iran disrupting usual routes and pricing. In that context, having lounge access felt genuinely useful. But it also raises a bigger question. Are lounge updates like this really in line with what British Airways now expects you to spend to earn status? It’s something that deserves a bit more scrutiny on whether it’s worth it.

Opening Hours

The lounge operates daily from 5 am to 10 pm. I visited in the evening, and food service was already winding down by around 8 pm. Afternoon tea was still out with a selection of cakes, but that was cleared as things started to shut down. Hot dishes weren’t being topped up, and bottles were quietly being removed from the drinks stations. It does make you wonder how long some of it had been sitting out, and how fresh it really was. If you’re on a late departure, expect a definite closing-time feel.

Locating the lounge & reception

Finding the British Airways Galleries North Lounge is straightforward. It sits directly after fast-track security on the north side of Terminal 5A, with no transit train and no long corridor to navigate. Access is open to Club World passengers, BA Gold and Silver members, and oneworld Sapphire or Emerald cardholders. No pay-per-visit option.

Comfort

The refurbishment has given the lounge a cleaner, more contemporary feel. Seating is varied, and some areas offer decent runway views. I’d originally planned to head to Galleries South to dodge the crowds, but Galleries North was surprisingly empty. It ended up being one of the quietest visits I’ve had here in years, which made it far more enjoyable than usual. That said, this is very much timing-dependent. Daytime visitors during the long-haul rush will likely have a very different experience.

Food & Drink

A salad station, soup, and a handful of hot buffet dishes were available. Quantity wasn’t the issue, quality was underwhelming. Nothing I tried stood out, and the overall standard felt functional rather than considered.

The crisps vanished at one point, briefly alarming, but reappeared after a restock. A self-serviced bar for you to make your own drinks.

The wine, though, felt cheap: limited in range and unremarkable in quality. Don’t come here expecting a drinks list that matches the refurb.

Toilets and showers

On the practical side, the toilets remain firmly pre-renovation, with an older fitout that feels at odds with the rest of the lounge. Given the investment elsewhere, it’s a strange omission – the kind of thing you’d think would be first on the list. There are roughly about ten showers available, which is a decent option for anyone connecting or freshening up before a long-haul departure. There was no queue, but suspect it gets busy at peak hours.

WiFi, power & productivity

Wi-Fi clocked in at around 50 Mbps, more than enough for video calls or file uploads. Power sockets are available across the seating areas. There’s a dedicated work zone, but it sits right next to the children’s area, which is a baffling layout decision that someone presumably approved with a straight face. On a quiet evening it didn’t matter. During a busy daytime session, I suspect productivity would take a hit. But in reality there’s lots of spaces you could work, if you didn’t need a plug socket.

Extras

There’s very little here to get excited about. No standout features, no surprises, nothing you’d go out of your way for. The Wi-Fi is fast enough for proper work, but that’s about as far as it goes.

The refurbishment has given it a cleaner, more modern look. My visit benefited from unusually quiet conditions, and I’m realistic enough to know that a midday visit during peak departures would tell a very different story.

For evening travellers, the British Airways Galleries North Lounge is a comfortable and perfectly adequate place to spend some time before your flight. If you’re travelling during busier hours, it’s worth weighing it against Galleries South before committing.

But it also raises a bigger question. If British Airways is asking people to pay a premium for Business Class or to spend heavily to earn status, the expectation is higher than this. The lounge is functional, but not something I’d spend a small fortune just to access.
