Avios Earning Workarounds

We have a further update about the British Airways Avios earning rules, but don’t worry, there are a few Avios earning workarounds that might interest you.

For those who missed it, British Airways is introducing a new revenue-based earning system. Under this system, Avios will be earned based on the amount spent on the ticket, rather than the distance traveled. However, there are still ways to continue earning Avios under the previous system.

One such exception is for those who book BA package holidays. If you choose this option, you will still earn Avios based on the percentage of miles flown on your British Airways flights. So, if you’re a fan of package holidays, this option allows you to retain the traditional earning method.

Another useful exception is applicable when booking British Airways tickets through partner airlines. If you choose this route, you will still earn Avios based on the percentage of miles flown, just like before. This provides an alternative method for Avios accumulation.

An interesting twist to the rules comes into play when you credit your Avios from a British Airways flight to Qatar Airways’ Privilege Club. In this scenario, you will still receive a percentage of air miles credited to your account, allowing you to continue earning Avios through a different loyalty program. You can later transfer these points to your BA Executive Club account. We’ll show you how in a follow-up post.

Furthermore, if you decide to fly with Oneworld partner airlines such as Qatar Airways, Qantas, or American Airlines, you will still be credited a percentage of miles flown to your BA Executive Club. The fare class, rather than the monetary price of the ticket, will determine the Avios earned. This exemption maintains the traditional earning approach for these partner flights. The table below shows what you’ll still earn when flying with Qatar Airways and crediting your points to your BA Executive Club account.

Qatar Airways Avios awarded (percentage of flown miles)

Avios award table from 1 October 2021

Eligible Fare ClassAvios
Economy lowest (T, O, W, G)25%
Economy low (K, M, L, V, S, N, Q)50%
Economy flexible (Y, B, H)100%
Business low (P)75%
Business (J, C, D, I, R)125%
First (F, A)150%

It is essential to emphasise that these changes exclusively affect Avios earning rates. Tier point accrual remains unaffected and will continue to be earned at the same rate as before.

In summary, while British Airways is implementing new Avios earning rules, there are notable exceptions that enable you to continue earning Avios under the previous system. We hope these Avios earning workarounds come as welcome relief and you have happy, points-rich travels!
